About

I'm Mariel. I'm finding my style, which is caught somewhere between a prepster obsession with plaid and grosgrain ribbon, and the hard hitting trends of New York. My other blog is mariellie.

Catalog Ready

Saturday, November 26

The Occasion…

Meeting up with my new blog-to-real-life friend Kendyl!  We’ve already gushed over our awesome afternoon together a lot so I won’t repeat it all again, but woo hoo for new friends!

The Outfit…

Gray V Neck Tee - American Apparel

Magenta Cardi - J Crew

Olive Green Cargo Capris - Express

Pastel Herringbone Stripe Scarf - Target

Knockoff Allstars - Random shoe store in the LES, purchased for an impromptu wiffleball game.  Please note the sparkly laces which came with the shoes.

The Explanation…

This outfit is loosely based on a J Crew catalog spread that I ripped out for inspiration but predictably is lost in my many piles of tear sheets.  Basically it was a model wearing olive green chinos, rolled to ankle length, with a yellow silk Kelsey top and contrasting cardigan.  (I’ll scan and add if I can find it later.)  It was a nice compromise between weekend comfortable and dressing nicely for lunch.

Back at Terminal 5

The Occasion…

My boyfriend’s birthday fell on Thanksgiving this year, so we didn’t get to celebrate together on the actual day.  He did come back to NY the next day, though, and my present to him was dinner and tickets to a Zero 7 concert.  I was obsessed with one of the vocalists (the 3 main collaborators invite different singers to perform and record with them) who sang a haunting version of their most well known song, “In the Waiting Line” which was part of the Garden State soundtrack.  (Listen to her version on her MySpace page.)  It was such a great show!

The Outfit…

Graphic Print LS Mini Dress - Tibi via Buffalo Exchange (previously worn here and here)

Black Blazer - Theory via TJ Maxx

Black Leggings - via Daffy’s

Multistrand Necklace - F21

Black Suede Booties - Marc Jacobs via Deja Vu Boutique (Tampa, FL)

Black Ruched Leather Handbag - Bally

The Explanation…

This is my third remix of this dress and by far my favorite.  The overall outfit felt a bit rock and roll but the colorful floral print kept it from getting too edgy, and I think these booties work really well with the slim leg of the leggings.  I also think it matched the vibe of the venue and the band, which is hard to pin down but hovers in the electronic/indie/ambient genres.

I’m curious…what do you wear to concerts?  Do you try to personify the band you’re seeing?

Turkey Day

CIMG2343

Thursday, November 26

The Occasion…

Thanksgiving dinner at my friend Lindsey’s apartment!  Linds and I spent our first Thanksgiving in New York together last year, when we cooked a feast including a turkey, all the sides, and three kinds of pies.  For two people.  We spent the day watching the parade, followed by a marathon of all the Thanksgiving-themed Friends episodes.  This year, we kept up the tradition, adding a couple more friends to the guest list so our dinner wasn’t so gluttonous.  So much fun!

The Outfit…

Orange LS Tee - Target

Earthy Floral Skirt - French Connection, thrifted (previously worn here)

Brown Tights - Target

Brown Leather Boots - J Crew

CIMG2349

The Explanation…

So what if I like to dress in a harvest color scheme for harvest-related holidays?  Yes, it was warm enough outside for me to wear just a t-shirt.  Crazy, right?  And look how cute Lindsey was in her retro Modcloth dress!

Fishnets and black pumps meant that her outfit totally put mine to shame.  She even had a vintage apron that she wore while tending to the turkey.  Adorbs.

Going Mod

CIMG2355

Wednesday, November 25  (I know, I have a lot of catching up to do!)

The Occasion…

Work and a trip to Tiffany’s.  Fact: I should not be trusted with nice things.  Last year my awesome boyfriend bought me silver studs from Tiffany for Christmas.  Less than a month later, on New Year’s, I lost one.  Dumb.  I finally got around to asking them what I could do, and guess what?  You can buy just a half pair through their customer service department.  Plus free polishing of the old one and adjustment of the backs.  I was very, very impressed, and I finally get to wear my earrings again.  Added bonus - the views of Fifth Avenue from the sixth floor of the store are sick.

The Outfit…

Black Turtleneck Sweater - Ann Taylor LOFT, thrifted

Cream Jumper - H&M, thrifted

Turquoise Necklace - gift

Turquoise Tights - via Daffy’s

Black Ballet Flats - shoe store in Spain

The Explanation…

A couple of days ago, E from academichic posted a lovely winter white outfit, which reminded me that I had this cream jumper hanging neglected in my closet.  Its heavy weight makes it an ideal cold weather layering piece, and I love how it and the neutral black top tone down my very bright tights.  I felt totally mod and totally cute.

Happy Thanksgiving!

autumn

This year, among other things, I am thankful for this blog and the blogging community that has embraced me.  Thank you so much for your kind words and compliments.  It truly means so much to me!

I’ll be taking a short break to enjoy the long weekend, so regular posts will resume on Monday.
