Recommended Reading
This is my bookshelf, with a carefully curated pile of coffee table books, biographies, and how-tos. Since yucky winter weather is around the corner, when all you want to do is curl up on the couch and read something full of fantasy, here are my recommendations. (They also make great gifts!)
- The Fashion Book: A to Z encyclopedia of important industry figures, past and present. Mine is the mini version, but it comes in a formidable hardcover volume as well.
- The Little Black Book of Style by Nina Garcia: Fun little advice book from everyone’s favorite outspoken editor and Project Runway judge.
- Marc Jacobs: Memoirs from arguably the best designer of this generation.
- Chanel: A Woman of her Own: If you saw either of the Chanel biopics, you’ll love this in-depth look at the life of Coco.
- Living for Design: The Yves St Laurent Story: YSL biography stolen from my mom’s bookshelf.
- New York Look Book: A pre-Sartorialist look at New York City street style.
- Manolo Blahnik Drawings: Framed color copies of any page of this book would make wonderful home decor.
- Making Faces by Kevyn Aucoin: Intricate tutorials using celebrity models from star makeup artist.
- Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years: Everyone loves Jackie O.
- Chanel: The catalog from the Met Costume Institute exhibition. Buy it for the photos of the amazing archive pieces.
- Manolo Blahnik: Biography of the shoe designer.
- Carolina Herrera: Portrait of a Fashion Icon: I found this one at a thrift store, remember? Lucky day!
- Annie Liebovitz: A Photographer’s Life 1990-2005: Gorgeous photos, fashion and non-fashion alike.
- On Fashion (not pictured): Very academic look at fashion’s participation in photography, feminism, popular culture, politics and consumerism.
