31 October 11
Saturday, October 29. Matt and I hosted a Halloween party on Saturday night, and despite the snowstorm (!) a bunch of our friends came out - fully costumed, of course.
Sarah, Linds and I decided last year that we would go as our favorite witches from our childhood - the Sanderson sisters from Hocus Pocus. We cobbled together our costumes from thrift store finds and had a blast wearing their crazy makeup. I put a spell on you!
On me: Blazer - William Rast for Target, thrifted / Blouse - Tahari, thrifted / Skirt - Mossimo, thrifted / Belt - vintage, via Dolly’s (Durham, NC) / Booties - Marc Jacobs, via Deja Vu Boutique (Tampa, FL) / Wig - from last year’s Mrs. Frizzle costume
Check out my Halloween costumes from years past!

Halloween 2010: Seatbelts, Everyone!

IMG_2919

My boyfriend’s sister gave me the best idea for a Halloween costume - Ms Frizzle from the children’s book series The Magic School Bus! Since Ms Frizzle’s outfits change depending on the field trip, I chose to do the Lost in Outer Space edition.

Cartoon on right via.

To recreate this costume, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Navy shirt dress - Mine is from the Gap
  • Red orange wig - I got this one at Ricky’s
  • Paper or fabric cut into solar system shapes and school bus for bag
  • A love for scientific adventures!

Halloween 2010: Doppleganger

n1306207_32584324_2830

I’ve got an idea for this year’s Halloween costume brewing, but I thought it would be fun to take a look at some of my costumes from Halloweens and theme parties past. Make sure to check out the rest of the ideas I posted this week - and I’ll be sure to post this year’s costume, too!

It’s Friday with Halloween just around the corner, so by now, you don’t have too much time to craft the perfect costume. Never fear - the doppleganger costume is here!

Senior year of college, my friend Daphne and I got the brilliant idea to dress up as our good friends Stephen and Ryan. Once we had the idea, a costume was easy - these guys’ day to day wardrobes were pretty predictable, and procuring the pieces was as easy as breaking into their apartment while they weren’t home and stealing their clothes, so as not to ruin the surprise. (Not kidding on this one, but this is probably a ‘don’t try this at home’ moment.)

What you’ll need will vary based on who you’re impersonating, but here’s a glimpse of how well we matched up…

Stephen and I…note that both of us are wearing a t-shirt from the ice cream shop where he used to work during high school.

I’m pretty sure Ryan returned home from class wearing that exact outfit.

Besides being pretty funny within our group of friends, this costume was also insanely comfortable. It was worn to another Franklin Street celebration, and I truly did not envy the girls in skimpy nurse and fairy costumes. Keepin’ it real, folks.

Halloween 2010: Alice in Wonderland

n1305621_31002094_9688

I’ve got an idea for this year’s Halloween costume brewing, but I thought it would be fun to take a look at some of my costumes from Halloweens and theme parties past. Make sure to check out my other ideas, too!

Alice in Wonderland is a pretty standard Halloween costume, but during my junior year of college, my friends and I all joined together for a group costume. We went to celebrate on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill — thousands of people fill the streets partying and admiring each others’ costumes. So much fun!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Blue dress - mine was a formal length dress from the clearance rack at Marshalls. I hacked it off and taped the hem on the inside.
  • Apron - I folded an eyelet sham in half and tied it around my waist with a big ribbon. Voila!
  • White tights or knee highs
  • Mary janes
  • Headband
  • Flavor Flav style White Rabbit and a Mad Hatter to accompany you

If you’re heading to a party on Halloween, might I suggest that you tie a “Drink Me” tag on a bottle of wine? Hey, it’s just part of the costume!
